Gilead is set to sell billions of dollars of a coronavirus drug that's far from 'amazing' after the US approved remdesivir to treat COVID-19

Researchers are pairing remdesivir with other potential COVID-19 treatments to boost its effectiveness
The next step for remdesivir is to test it in combination with other drugs, a common tactic in fighting viruses. In HIV, for instance, three-drug cocktails have led to dramatic improvements in patients.

The NIH has launched multiple trials that use remdesivir as a standard treatment for hospitalized patients. All study volunteers will receive remdesivir, and then they'll receive either an additional experimental treatment on top of the antiviral or a placebo.

These studies are testing Johnson & Johnson's anti-inflammatory drug Remicade, Bristol Myers Squibb's arthritis treatment Orencia, AbbVie's experimental treatment called cenicriviroc, AbbVie's psoriasis drug Skyrizi and Humanigen's experimental antibody treatment lenzilumab.

The NIH's infectious disease unit previously tested a combination of remdesivir and Olumiant, an arthritis drug marketed by Eli Lilly. Results announced in September showed a slight but statistically meaningful benefit in adding Olumiant: a one-day reduction in median recovery time.

The Indianapolis-based drugmaker is in talks with the US Food and Drug Administration about potential emergency approval for Olumiant as a COVID-19 treatment.
